I was at 7 Arm'd between Oct 1971 and Aug 1976, I was in the FRG group and went to N/Ireland with 7 Arm'd in 1974 , just wondered if the original w/shops and especially the FRG building was still there or is it all new now, Also what was the number of the Barracks second up from the NAAFI towards the cookhouse at he top , cos that was my barracks, in fact what were all the 3 barracks numbers that side. great memories and i have just had a visit from 2 of my mates at the time called Jan Krissofersen and Steve (Bert) Lancaster , by the way my real name was Trevor Horn nicknamed Toots !!

the 7 armd workshop has not changed location or buildings scince, your time,,theres a couple of,,additional,,new workshops ,,
added but the basic buildings ,,camp are the same.
the barracks all have names now ,,but your one is named ,st barbarras barracks and its still the home of the reme workshop..
except they have a new title now,,2 close support battalion,,reme.
the only differance to your time that you would notice is theres a brand new naafi building and the whole of the barracks area is surrounded by security fences..so limited access,,
if i can be of any more help..please ask..kev the curator. Sehr glücklich

Thanks for your swift reply , some photo's would be great , I think MB 31 etc seems to ring a bell , but then again it's 30 odd years ago and it's all seems a bit of a haze , for various reasons .
My first 3 Pltn FRG OC was a Captain Castell , real gentleman , he must have had a hell of a job to keep us lot in line when i think back , andd then Captain Brooker MBE took over , he was nicknamed "Beefy" Brooker for obvious reasons , great bloke and a bit of a hard task master with a heart ( I think) of gold. We used to call the FRG office "eyes in the Sky " as it was positioned upstairs in the right hand corner as you went in the hanger.
As far as i remember we were the first batch to do a tour in Northern Ireland in March or April 1974 , and i was on the advance party, a "Q" Walters was our WO2, I served at Ballykinler the workshop, then Newry and Bessbrook with the PARA'S and I believe it was "42 " or "45"Marines who took over from them in around May "74, I used to travel by helicopter to Crossmaglen(great pilots) and another outstation weekly to check the saracens out , which they rarely used. On one occassion to Crossmaglen the "charwalla" arrived in a Morris Oxford (I think) and i looked at the starter for him as it was playing up, after he left hell broke out as I found out he was killed by the IRA on his way back home.Plenty of other memories , some sad and some happy ( it's all coming back thinking about it all ). Then to Lurgan with the Green Howards , and a Page 3 beauty arrived one day when i was working on the saracens , ( made our day) lots of other stories which i think i will write down some day. we came back a bit late from our tour because of the electric strike in Ireland .

Fally was a great place for me and some great memories , & 7 Field ( as it was then ) had a great camaraderie as will always be in my heart , anyway thanks for listening to me droning on and thanks again - Trevor Horn ( Toots) ex Corporal.
